When I found this pretty rose fabric at a yard sale last year I knew exactly what I need to make with it: a high waisted, big bow pencil skirt. It was just kind of meant to be and I’ve been saving it since then.
I used a pencil skirt tutorial from a sewing book I got for Christmas called Sew Everything Workshop. I love it because it has actual patterns + easy to read instructions with pictures. Of course I had to add the high waist band + the big bow.
New things I learned this time: an invisible zipper, invisible hemming + darts!
I love the freedom of creating any skirt you want in any fabric. Sewing is kind of my new obsession. I have a bunch more projects in the works to show you, so stayed tuned!
I need you opinion though: how do we feel about the length? Does it need to be hemmed up to my knees? I’m still unsure

love this! Where is the peter pan color shirt from?? I saw it on pinterest and was like, I NEED THIS OUTFIT!!
Your skirt is gorgeous, and so is the photo! I am pretty sure I "pinned" it on Pinterest… Kuddos for learning the darts and hidden zipper. I have yet to learn the "regular" zipper.
You have a great blog -I'm going back to look around some more…
I love your Skirt ….
Chair + Skirt = Perfection!
I loves this photo + skirt1
what a beautiful color that is! And the fabric looks substantial, too. Love it. Love it. Love it. Leave it long…it's so much more elegant. Any shorter would cheapen it. Glad you're enjoying your sewing. I put my machine away for many, many years and am just now creating away again….AND…my husband just bought me a new machine I'm addicted to.Keep creating away!xoxNancy
ohhh. DROOL. …..DROOL.
The length is just perfect!!! This is such a lovely skirt!

This skirt is perfect! I just discovered your blog via A Cup of Jo and thought I'd stop by and say hello
xoCassie
Really cute skirt, and I think its current length makes it look sophisticated. Great job with the sewing! Next question: where'd you get that cute blouse?
Love the length! Too cute! What an inspiration.
love this skirt!I so need to learn to sew!!! i think you just pushed me into it!xxcallie
I have been meaning to stop by for some time and tell you that, well, you are amazing.
This is almost too much. So beautiful, and such gorgeous modeling shots. Love this length — it hits so flatteringly when you sit down.
Where can I buy this skirt? It's GORGEOUS!
I love it! What a great fabric too. I love that sewing book, I've had it for a few years and always take it out and marvel at the projects and then never do any of them…this one is great, I might have to pull that book out again…
awesome. did you know my mom made all of her own (super cute) clothes until she was 30? you will have to chat about it next time you see her. sad that i have no idea when that will be! : (
The skirt looks fantastic! I would hem it up and maybe let out the front darts just a bit, or shorten them so there is no puckering. They you will have a really custom fit!
what a stunning skirt, love the colour, love the bow! The current length makes it look very 1940's, gorgeous!
Beautiful as is!Wanna send one to Japan?
I love this skirt! And I would keep the length as is.
question: did you use a pattern and if so which one? p.s. keep the length.
You're kind of amazing, liz! I took sewing in college and all of my stuff took hours and looked like crap – definitely not wearable. Excellent work!
Wowzers! Congrats to you. Its lovely. I'd say leave it this length for awhile, it really suits you, then perhaps hem it shorter next season/year, etc
I don't know that I would have ever guessed that I could love a skirt that was PINK with a BOW, but…::swoon::I think the length is just fine, given the body hugging nature. Flirty and sexy, but always appropriate.Name of link
It's perfect! Will you post a pattern?
the length is perfect & this is amazing. i wish i had your sewing abilities.
wowza! you are a genius, girl!
2 thumbs up! leave the length- it's more old fashion (in a super good way)
This is gorgeous! I wouldn't change a thing!
Don't change it! That length is so cute and retro! I'm in love with the pink and the bow, just adorable.
Lovely design for your skirt.Jana
I really really really love this skirt! I'm all about the bows! xoxo
this is the perfect skirt, i love it!
Wow. My thought when I saw the first photo was – "I am going to buy that skirt."Rats- I barely graduated from Home Ec. Keep the length! Looks amazing!
