DIY: Place Setting Stones

I’m working with COOL WHIP Whipped Topping on a few posts about creating special family moments. I’m always trying to think of ways to get Henry more involved in dinner prep and table setting.  I came up with this idea to make place setting stones, stamped with letters to spell the names of each member of the family to designate seating for family dinners. It might be fun to also create stones to spell out ‘guest’ for any dinner visitors.

I’ve talked about my mini stamp kit from Paper Source that I love. I’ve used it for a few projects so far: Conversation Hearts, Lemon Sugar Scrub DIY, and making Holiday neighbor gifts. It’s my favorite thing! Anyway, slight tangent…

Henry is four years old which means that drawing letters and animals with sharp teeth are the most interesting and exciting things to him (and that makes being his mom really easy in some ways!). I thought this would be a fun way to incorporate the alphabet into dinner prep, and a great process activity to do with kids as well (those little clay pincher motions are great for pre-writing skills!)

Using Sculpey Polymer Clay roll a good size into a ball. Mix pieces of a few colors together for a more marbled stone.

Clay is a great activity for strengthening little hands for writing. After rolling, flatten the stones slightly. You child can help find the letters to stamp out each family member’s name into the clay stones.

Bake according to your Polymer clay instructions (usually about 15 minutes) and let cool. I like to store them in a little jar that sits on the kitchen table ready for table setting.

At each dinner gathering, your child can help sort through the stones to spell each family member’s name and place them where ever they’d like.
