I hope you all are loving springtime as much as I am! Here in California we’re having a bit of a heat wave and it has me in the mood to be outside! I don’t have a very green thumb, actually I don’t think even really have thumbs (I do, don’t worry, I’m just a terrible gardener). Despite this, every spring I plant flower, veggies, and herbs, and all kinds of greenery hoping and wishing I can keep them alive long enough to enjoy them in the warm California sunshine. Maybe this will be the summer I’ll get to slice into a juicy watermelon I planted all by myself! Fingers crossed.I LOVE green things, and this home is my dream home incarnate. In the post she describes the house as a garden with a roof. I just love that. How wonderful would it be to wake up every morning and sip your coffee surrounded by all things green! For your garden space, however large or small it may be, here are some goodies I found over on Etsy…

  • 5 Spring Wardrobe Essentials

spring essentialsSpring is in full swing! I love spring fashion- bright colors, bold patterns, and a great time to try new trends you’ve been seeing around. We’ve collected 5 must have essentials that we love for our spring wardrobes.

Photography by Ashley Thalman, styling by Karli Haglund (karli.elaine@gmail.com), modeling by Marina Tijerino, graphics by Ashley Aikele.

    1. Printed Pants: Yeah for bright bold patterns on pants! We are loving the idea of pairing a floral pant with another patterned top (tip: just be sure both aren’t big patterns and that there’s one color repeated in both pieces). Do you own a pair of floral pants? Love this pair I spotted at Forever 21.spring essentials

  • Weekend Roundup

    epic

Hi friends! This is another shot from the Epic Playdate I posted about yesterday – Henry was obsessed with those huge beach balls all day. I’ll have to order one for the summer. This had been a crazy week- we headed to DisneyLand right after the Hyundai event and it was amazing (check out more on my instagram). Way better now that he’s 5. Last time we went he was 3 and it was still fun but we all enjoyed it more this time and he could hold up all day for the most part. Hope you’re up to something fun! We’ve been having a serious heat wave so the beach + popsicles are on the agenda. Here are a few links to explore:

  • 5 Tickets to Alt for Everyone

    AltForEveryoneABOUT4

Alt Summit is my very favorite conference for professional bloggers in the design/style/lifestyle genre. It’s the only one I go to every year. But I get it, conferences can be expensive to fit in your budget when you’re just getting started or when you feel like the income you’re making isn’t enough to rationalize buying a ticket/hotel/travel etc (I’d argue otherwise but I know how it is).
The great news is that Alt just announced a new online conference, Alt for Everyone, in two weeks: May 16-18 (thurs/fri/sat). It’s packed full of speakers that you can pick and choose from based on your schedule. They also just announced that Joy Cho of Oh Joy is keynoting (love her!). I’m teaching two classes- one on organization as blogger and one on getting started selling ads. Check out the full schedule here.

So if you haven’t picked up a ticket yet, we’re giving away FIVE tickets to Alt for Everyone here on the blog! Five of you will win a ticket to access all this fantastic info, the best of Alt Summit but without the endless outfit changes or travel/hotel costs.

To win: Simply comment on this post and pin an item from your favorite post on Say Yes. You have until Thursday night 5/10 10pm PST to enter and the winners will be announced next Friday. One entry per person.

    Good luck!

  • An Epic Playdate

    epic1-all

(Image by David Crowther for Hyundai)

This past weekend we drove down to Santa Barbara for Hyundai’s Epic Playdate event. It was a fun play ‘day’ for a bunch of families from my ad network and a few others that won trips to go. I was in charge of one of the days events, group sand art, and there were other bloggers that were organizing events too throughout the day. Oh Happy Day made giant bubbles, Oh Joy made an ice cream bar, Dooce taught a kid photography class, Mighty Girl organized a giant paint fight, etc.

I was really impressed with how well thought out everything was. There was tons of food (I accidentally ate two lunches because the ‘pre lunch snack’ was so substantial I thought it was lunch!), lots for the kids to do and plenty of fun activities everyone could be involved in either doing or just watching. There was even an epic nap tent which had beds and cribs and books for ones that needed some quiet time. Henry and I both needed a little time in there in the afternoon to re-fuel for the evening. The idea of ‘family friendly’ doesn’t always work for kids and parents both but they managed to truly find a happy medium where everyone was having a great time.

    epic8

After the day event, the families and others that helped organize it moved over to the beach where we played on the beach, ate dinner, sang songs around the fire, and then stayed over night in the coolest tents ever (the top image of the post). epic11I was pinching myself the whole time- it felt like I had been invited to a beautiful wedding of a celebrity. Everything was perfect. I feel really lucky to have been a part of it and asked to participate. It was a day we’ll always remember and I was blown away by all the hard work and thought that went into planning each detail of it.

  • Redwood Tree Climbing

    IMG_6485

    (I’m climbing the Redwoods!)

Have I told you about my love affair with Redwood trees? I think it must have originated from my mother growing up in Redwood City, a town just south of San Francisco (which turns out doesn’t really have many Redwood trees at all in it), yet growing up in a New Yorker I kind of romanticized her California childhood amongst the giant Redwood trees. We’ve done a few family trips to visit the Redwoods since moving to San Francisco and the obsession with these magnificent trees continues! There’s something so magical about them, and Redwood groves are some of the most peaceful and spiritual places I’ve ever been. Aaaaand, yes, I did love this movie growing up.

(Hyundai Redwood Tree Climbing – Epic Playdate from Liz Stanley on Vimeo)

Above is a video they made when Jordan and I and our families ventured up north last month as part of the Hyundai epic playdate campaign- to climb Redwood trees! When they asked for ideas on what to do, I thought how amazing it would be to experience the Redwoods from up higher than eye level. Plus I knew Henry would love it and it would give him a chance to do something so completely different and new, especially since he spends most of his day in gated parks and schools. My favorite parts of the little video are when we got the kids on the rope and Jordan’s perfect expression sailing through the air amongst Redwood trees.

  • Sandals: Flat vs Wedge

    By fashion contributor Ashley
    flatvswedge-01

The quickest way to embrace spring is to throw on some sandals. It’s like a breath of fresh air for your feet, am I right? What types of sandals do you prefer? Heels and wedges? or flats and slip ons? I usually wear flat sandal’s all summer with the occasional LOW wedge. What about you?

Flat photo and one, two, three of my favorite flats around the web.

Wedge photo and one, two, three of my favorite wedges around the web.

  • Sites and Bites

    Toast_HawthornTitle

The weather has been amazing lately! When the sun is out, dining outdoors is in. Luck for us Oakland has a good number of restaurants that offer patio seating, and Toast on College Ave is one of them. It was easy to convince my sister to join the baby and I for a little lunch bite while soaking in some spring sun.

    Toast4

The name Toast might throw you off for a moment since there are more than one restaurant in the Bay Area sharing the same name, but this Toast is not of the diner or breakfast variety. Instead, here you can nibble on things like cheese and charcuterie for lunch or dinner.

    Toast2

I’ve been to Toast several times, but for this lunch we ordered a salad of blood orange and avocado, the salami plate, a deviled egg salad sandwich, a lemon chicken kale sandwich and we shared it all.

Toast6Everything was really tasty. The citrus avocado paring in the salad was perfectly refreshing, and salami of course is always good! I had tried the egg sandwich before, and it still proved to be a favorite of mine.

    Toast1

Another bonus to patio dinning is it tends to be very kid friendly. If you have a little one like my four month old Parker, there is plenty of room to park a stroller, plus sound dispersed outdoors is much more forgiving for those moment when they get a little fussy.

  • DIY Studded Zipper Pouch

    By craft contributor Lauren
    ombre-stud-zipper-pouch-1

With a degree in fashion design, I will always have a place in my heart for fashion and accessories. Although I’ve moved into creating decor for weddings and parties, I love a good DIY that I can use on a night out, or any outing at that. My weakness is definitely small colorful pouches that help keep me organized. I have a little collection that I use for random things like mints, pens, business cards and lip gloss. My favorite part is that you can take one out and use it as a mini clutch if needed, carrying only your necessary items.

    ombre-stud-zipper-pouch-2

The trend of spikes and studs always had me looking for a “girly-er” version. So I had the idea of keeping the spikes and coating them with candy inspired colors (did I mention I really like candy too? no? I do…). I loved that it still had a bit of edge, but with the feminine touch I needed.

Here is what you will need to make your own ombre studded zipper pouch…
