• DIY Toy Leather Drum

    leatherdrum3

This toy leather drum is a really easy and cute craft to make as a gift for a young child. Mini versions would also be cute as favors for a child’s music party.
You could experiment with drum sticks too. I was thinking felted pom poms attached to chopsticks? Could be a cute addition!

  • Perfect 5 Minute Makeup

    main2

In January I announced a new beauty series we’re starting  called 10 Easy + Affordable Beauty Tips, all taught by our resident hair and makeup stylist to the stars, Christie Somers, and fabulous photographer Alisia Packard (you can read more about them in my about page here).

Our first lesson last month was all about Creating the Perfect Curl, and today Christie’s going to give us the ins and outs of a perfect 5 minute makeup routine (since that’s usually all the time we have to spend on our face in the morning). You’ll also see her recommended products and a few tips she’s learned doing makeup for over a decade. Here are Christie’s instructions paired with Alisia’s images (and this time Christie is modeling herself, isn’t she gorgeous?!?):1web

Since we are all busy ladies, we thought it would be nice to give you a guide to 5 min makeup for the everyday woman. In my job, I get the benefit of talking to women all day long and it seems many people misunderstand the point of wearing make-up. The point isn’t to wear make-up just to wear make-up. It’s meant to enhance our best features and distract from our less favorite ones. For example, the point of eyeliner is to open up and draw attention to ones eyes. But many women put a thick black line straight across their eye without taking into consideration how applying it achieves the desired effect. While there is definitely a place for having fun with your make-up (smokey eyes, red lips–and don’t worry we will get to those!), you want to keep your every day look pretty natural and simple. We want to look like a slightly better version of ourselves, not entirely different people.
My must have items for every day make up are…

  • 4 Favorite Styles of Spring Jackets

Living in San Francisco, spring jackets are really the only jackets I have in my wardrobe and I wear them year round (so I can rationalize investing in a few favorites). Here are a 4 of my favorite styles of spring jackets, which is your favorite? I teamed up with the gorgeous Liz of Cotton and Curls whose here for a few months going to fashion school design (she’s an amazing seamstress) and was willing to model some looks for me.

Style 1: A short sleeve poncho

A waterproof/windproof poncho is perfect for a ‘tut-tut it looks like rain’ spring day. Great for unpredictable weather like we have here in San Francisco that’s sunny + warm one minute and windy + cloudy the next. A great transitional piece for spring!

I bought the pink + polka dot spring poncho above here (sadly, sold out!), but here are a couple others to check out…

  • Color Crush: Emerald

    By fashion contributor Ashley

This years Pantone color of the year is emerald…which makes for an extra fun St. Patrick’s Day this year. Here is a little round up of some of my favorite emerald green pieces out there. I think the dress and hunter boots are my top pick. How do you feel about emerald? What shade of green will you be wearing on St. Patrick’s Day?

  • Shamrock Garland DIY

Contributed by Darleen of Darleen Meier Jewelry

In my opinion, every holiday needs a garland, even the ones overlooked.  A simple garland can add a little holiday festivity to your home.  We don’t decorate much for St. Patrick’s Day, but my children are at an age where they are looking for a bit o’ leprechaun luck come March 17th

Easy green decorations that I can throw up the week of St. Patty’s Day helps us celebrate the luck o’ the Irish.  So, I was excited to design this no-sew shamrock garland that will last for years to come.  It’s very easy to make, and you only need three supply items that you probably have stashed in your craft box.

    Here’s how to make it…

  • Lucky Pillow DIY

    By craft contributor Lauren

Throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to add a little color and change up your home between seasons and holidays. So I thought it would be fun to give ours some St. Patrick’s Day love with a festive pillow. Make one or a few of these painted and stitched pillows in any of your own phrases or sketches!

Here is what you need for this “lucky” version…

  • Sites and Bites

Photography and writing by Sites and Bites contributor Eva Kolenko

Hi! I’m writing from Oakland to share a couple more fantastic finds on Sites and Bites today. I’m really exited to be a regular contributor to Say Yes To Hoboken especially since it means I get to share some of my favorite spots from my home base in the East Bay.

Our first stop is lunch at Boot and Shoe Service on Grand Ave in Oakland. Since food is more fun with friends (you get to order and try more stuff), I invited the lovely Kate Ellen along, own of the Oakland shop Crown Nine, and creator of her own Jewelry Line, Kate Ellen Metals. If you know me, you know I am a huge fan of Boot and Shoe Service. Owned by Pizzaiolo’s Charlie Hallowell, this place does no wrong in my book and I’m sure my delicious photos will have you convinced!
There are two sides to this restaurant. Half is a casual cafe and the other half is a more traditional restaurant. Both are warm an inviting with lots of wood accents and a beautiful rustic open kitchen. This makes it an ideal place no matter what kind of dining experience you are looking for.
One day you may want to cozy up to the communal cafe table with your laptop, a cup of four barrel coffee, and some house made breakfast pastry, and another day you might pop over for a more romantic pizza date night.
Also, for those of you with kids, I’ve found Boot and Shoe Service to be fairly accommodating. I just recently brunched here with my 7 week old in her car seat and it wasn’t a problem at all!
For this lunch Kate and I had the Escarole Caesar Salad, Beef Brisket Sandwich and the lunch special, Cotechino and Umbrian Lentils. At was all super yummy, but I would have to say the lunch special was my favorite! Cotechino is an Italian style sausage and this one was paired with a salsa verde that was just to die of and it was all roasted together with the lentils in Boot and Shoe’s wood oven. Major comfort food on flavor steroids!

  • Shamrock Teabag DIY

    By craft contributor Rachael

For me, St Patrick’s Day celebrations have always centered around morning tea at work – something green to eat and a lovely cup of tea.

This year I thought it would be fun to make some shamrock teabag dippers to make the table more festive. They only take a couple of minutes to make, but they add a whole lot of cute to your teacup.

    Let’s get started with materials…
