In honor of Fathers Day this Sunday I thought it would fun to talk all about boyfriend style, which is totally hot right now. Sometimes boyfriend style can look sloppy or too edgy but adding a feminine piece in (a blazer is our default) seems to be the trick according to our stylist, Karli. Since, what’s more complimentary to boyfriend style than a touch of girlfriend?

Photography by Ashley Thalman, styling by Karli Haglund (karli.elaine@gmail.com), modeling by my beautiful sister Katrina, graphics by Ashley Aikele

Keep reading to see all four looks…

Look 1: Rocker Chic

Rocking the black on black with a vintage cut-off tee is bringing back serious flashbacks to the 80s, in a good way! Big teased hair pulled back looks especially stylish with big statement earrings like these rockin feminine hoops. Add a bright striped jacket for an added layer of coolness to your rocker chic look. Or take it off to rock out like Katrina:

{Vintage cut-off tee shirt, Levis skinny black denim jeans, high heeled booties (models own), purple striped blazer (stylists own), hoop earrings, braided beaded bracelet, leather/silver beaded bracelet from Dear Lizzie Boutique & Bistro}

Look 2: Classic Boyfriend Jeans

The foundation of boyfriend style is a good pair of boyfriend jeans. A bit destroyed and a little baggy (just like the kind you would steal from your old HS boyfriend). Make it chic with a lace blouse, over sized blazer, chains, summer sandals and classic leather bag.

{Boyfriend blazer, boyfriend jeans thrifted from Aeropostale, Zara gladiator heels, lace front blouse, layered-chain necklace from Dear Lizzie Boutique & Bistro), monogrammed brown leather tote bag from Mark and Graham}

Look 3: Schoolboy Cut-offs

Destroyed cut-offs are the boyfriend jean’s cool summer cousin. I did a post a bit back about how to destroy your own jeans, but the real thing is better for sure. Try pairing your destroyed cut-offs with a sheer blouse, schoolboy blazer and leather lace-up booties or combat boots.

PS A totally cool short hair cut couldn’t hurt either…

{Black/white schoolboy blazer from Club Monaco, sheer ivory blouse from Anne Taylor (stylists own), denim shorts- Liz’s old pair, thrifted leather booties}

Look 4: Summer menswear

There always seems to be an over sized tee lying around the house. Instead of tossing it, pair it with some floral shorts (culotts!), an over sized blazer, and classic oxfords for a little dash of menswear meets summer fashion.

(Over sized boyfriend blazer, white braided belt (stylists own), thrifted floral shorts, sphinx tee shirt + brown oxfords (models own)

With Fathers Day coming up I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to squeeze in a little menswear post. This is your chance to voice what you’d rather see your man in, a button up or a polo? Your answer might even be different from what he prefers to wear!

I got pretty lucky, my husband and I agree on most his style choices (after I refined his taste a little). He’s never been a fan of polo’s and neither have I so unless he is going golfing, then button up it is! He always throws one on when we go out, even if its to the grocery store. It’s kind of embarrassing when I dress down more than my husband does!

So which would you choose? Button up or Polo? Are there any other pieces that you and your man don’t see eye to eye on?

I re-purposed the mini milk bottles from the flavored milk post earlier this week to make these pretty pastel dipped vases. I love how these look lined up together on a plain white tablecloth. They’d be particularly cute for a baby shower, or just a pretty bottle to drink something yummy out of.

Check out this really easy technique for getting that perfect ‘dipped’ look that’s so popular right now…

PS Quick Update: I love Ashley’s idea on instagram to save up and re-use those mini starbucks bottles for this purpose!

Photography and styling by Liz Stanley. Assisted by Hanalei Gene and Devon Cone

Directions:

1. Clean off jars well (I bought my set of mini milk bottles here on etsy)
2. Grab a thick rubberband and wrap it around the bottom of the bottle so it’s a nice ‘dipped’ angle shape (see below)
3. Apply craft paint beneath the rubber band. I love this set from Martha Stewart
4. Apply a second coat. When dry, snip off the rubber band with scissors, which is better than trying to roll it off the bottle we found and potentially getting built up wet paint on the other parts of the bottle.

By fashion contributor Ashley

For the summer we will be doing a new series called Summer Uniform! It will highlight one piece that should be inducted into your closet for the summer and give tips on different ways to wear it.

To start things off, what is summer without a summer dress! This summer it’s all about having a patterned dress. The great thing is you can choose a dress with a silhouette that suits you, just get something fun and colorful.

For this post I chose to use this amazing floral dress by Zara. It’s a little bit more structured than the traditional summer dress but still has endless styling possibilities.

An instant way to dress a piece down is to add some denim to the mix and this jacket does just that. Roll up the sleeves to keep things cool along with a cap to keep the sun out of your eyes. For a little extra interest throw in a patterned tote. Cool, yet casual (and comfortable).
Look One:

1. Denim Jacket 2. Tote 3. Cap 4. Sneakers
Two more looks…

To give your dress the look of strolling through the markets of Paris add neutral accessories and a bright lipstick. A scarf would be adorable tied up in your hair. This look has a sweet feminine feel that I love.

Look Two:

I was so excited last week when Liz announced the best news ever, that she is pregnant! Like all of you I am over the moon about the new addition coming her way. To celebrate her announcement I did a round up of five of my favorite maternity dresses on the web.

1. The Shirt Dress from Hatch (above)

This dress is so versatile. I love the beachy way that Hatch styled it. You could also wear it with a leather jacket and some platforms for a night out.

2. Midi Striped Dress from ASOS

This dress is the ultimate everyday casual dress. Perfect for running errands or a day at the park.
It would also look great paired with a Levi jacket!

Keep reading for 3 more!

3. Water Color Tank Dress from GAP

This tank dress would work great as a cover up! It also could be one of those pieces that you find yourself throwing on over and over again around the house just because it is so cute and comfortable.

4. Polka Dot Dress from ASOS

The possibilities with this dress are seriously endless. I love the way they styled it here, for a date night or night out on the town! I can also picture it dressed down with some flats and a jean jacket.

5. Color Blocked Maxi from Target

More than once I have tried something on in Target not realizing it was from the maternity section. They have really cute maternity wear, this maxi included! It doesn’t get more comfortable than a maxi, perfect for these up coming summer months!

Jumpsuits seem to be a hot item for spring/summer and I have to say I’m totally on board! I say that having never actually tried one on…so my feelings could change but I love the look none the less. I love how effortless they feel and how you can dress them up or down. I picture wearing one on a slow bike ride to the farmers market and then adding heels and some bright lipstick later for a date night. Are you a fan of jumpsuits? Where would you wear yours?

I love spring fashion- bright colors, bold patterns, and a great time to try new trends you’ve been seeing around. We’ve collected 5 must have essentials that we love for our spring wardrobes.

Photography by Ashley Thalman, styling by Karli Haglund (karli.elaine@gmail.com), modeling by Marina Tijerino, graphics by Ashley Aikele.

1. Printed Pants: Yeah for bright bold patterns on pants! We are loving the idea of pairing a floral pant with another patterned top (tip: just be sure both aren’t big patterns and that there’s one color repeated in both pieces). Do you own a pair of floral pants? Love this pair I spotted at Forever 21.

(Floral pants from Koo de Ker, printed polka dot blouse Lauren Moffatt from Koo de Ker)

Keep reading for 4 more essentials for your spring wardrobe…

2. Daytime Lace: When you think of lace it’s usually for evening for bedtims, but I love the trend of lace for everyday where, especially paired down like we did here with some neutral booties. I could also see it paired with a cardigan or even a cargo shirt for a nice contrast. How killer is this lace dress Karli our stylist found?

(Lace shift dress brand Blu Pepper from Dear Lizzie Boutique, glitter and suede boot from Dear Lizzie Boutique, jewelry from Koo de Ker)

3. Neutral Booties: You’d be surprised how much you can wear with a pair of neutral booties. Dresses, cuffed jeans, skirts, and summer shorts all work great with them and add little bit of edge to any outfit. The most versatile footwear you can have in your closet!

(Glitter and suede boot from Dear Lizzie Boutique)

4. Floral Blazer: Perfect for spring, pair it with a pair of bright pants and neutral top (or experiment mixing patterns underneath like polka dot or stripes).

(Floral blazer brand Arc and Co from Dear Lizzie Boutique, Blue skinny jean from Koo de Ker, sheer blouse from Dear Lizzie Boutique, glitter and suede boot from Dear Lizzie Boutique, jewelry from Koo de Ker)

5. Arm Candy. It’s all about loading up on the bangles this season and I’m personally a huge fan! Such a chic touch to any outfit, day or night. Grab a bunch in different styles, shapes, textures and colors. A pastel nail color + clutch looks great as well with any spring outfit.
